Researchers who spend their lives staring down microscopes can now use a
digital camera to do the job for them. Polaroid has produced just such a camera
using a 12-millimetre-square charge-coupled device (CCD). It has a maximum
resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels and a shutter speed of between 1 second and
1/125 seconds. The device connects to a computer via a SCSI cable and comes with
software that lets scientists capture and edit images as they appear.
