Patents : Flash-bang wallop

By Barry Fox

1 November 1997

British company Quantel won its seventh Emmy last week and at the same time
lost control of key patents on creating special effects for TV and video. The
patents were used by Quantel to safeguard its technology. A federal court in
Wilmington, Delaware, decided that what Quantel claimed as new was “obvious”.
The patents are now invalid in the US and competitors are free to use the
technology.
