the Dounreay nuclear plant on the north coast of Scotland after fragments of
nuclear fuel were found on the seabed nearby during the summer. The Scottish
Office issued an emergency Food Protection Order “as a precautionary measure” on
the advice of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. The agency fears fish
may eat the radioactive particles and pass them on to people. But Dounreay’s
operators say that no particles have ever been found in fish, despite extensive
monitoring.
