TVs that listen

By Barry Fox

13 December 1997

IBM says we should be able to speak to a TV set and ask it for more
information about whatever is on the screen (EP 794 670). To do this it plans to
give TVs a limited vocabulary that will be updated regularly.

As a TV newscaster mentions France, for example, the TV company transmits
code to enable the set to recognise the words “France” or “French”. At the same
time, the station transmits information on France on teletext. If the viewer
speaks a keyword, the TV displays the information, either by superimposing it on
the picture, adding a subtitle or splitting the screen.
