An “intelligent” bandage will administer antibiotics only when they are
needed, say Japanese researchers. The dressing contains antibiotic molecules,
hooked up with a peptide that is attached to a polymer film. If the wound
becomes infected, oxygen is released as organic material decomposes. The oxygen
reacts with the peptide, releasing the antibiotic to attack the infection.
Researchers at Kyoto University, the Nara Advanced Institute of Science and
Technology and Kuraray Company will begin human tests next year.
