Review : Survival guide

17 January 1998

Chris Howes’s The Spice of Life is a straightforward explication of
Darwinian theory with a strong underpinning of ecological concern. The
illustrations suggest a youthful target audience, but as a general guide to the
exigencies of survival this is perfectly serviceable. Prince Charles is adduced
for some observations, which may help the populist approach but undercuts
credibility. Published by Cassell, £18.99, ISBN 0713723904.
