The US Food and Drug Administration has approved an altered haemoglobin
product for use in dogs. BioPure of Cambridge, Massachusetts, makes the product
by purifying and chemically altering cow haemoglobin. Even though the solution
can cause vomiting and blood vessel damage, vets will still use it because there
are few blood banks for dogs. Companies developing artificial blood for humans,
however, will have to meet higher safety standards.
