The idea of telecommuting—people working at home but staying in
contact with the office—predates the Net. But despite new products that
make it easier to work at home, such as video conferencing
(http://www.conferencing.bt.com/), telecommuting has not stemmed the rise in
traffic. Employers are strangely reluctant to believe that staff sitting in the
garden on a hot summer’s day really are working, even if they have their mobile
and laptop alongside the suntan lotion.
