In brief : No sweat

21 March 1998

BOTULINUM toxin, a poison used in chemical weapons, might cure excessive
perspiration.

A disorder called hyperhidrosis makes people sweat excessively. A team from
Julius Maximilian University in Würzburg, Germany, injected small doses of
a type of botulinum toxin called type A into a group of patients.

In a week, excess sweating stopped in all patients, the researchers report in
Archives of Dermatology (vol 134, p 301). They believe the toxin works
by blocking parts of the autonomic nervous system linked to perspiration.
