An early warning system for forecasting when water mains will burst in London
has been developed by the water company Thames Water and the Meteorological
Office. The computer model combines ground temperatures measured at six points
across the capital with the Met Office’s weather forecasts to predict when
temperatures will plunge low enough to freeze water in the mains and cause them
to burst.
