Mitsubishi Precision of Japan has fitted weightlifters’ barbells with
gyroscopes to provide a more balanced work-out. A small motor drives the gyro
inside one of the spheroidal weights, powered by batteries inside the other.
“When you exercise with normal barbells you are just fighting gravity,” says
Hajime Sone of Mitsubishi. “But with the gyro, you are exercising against a
lateral force as well, which is much better exercise for the muscles.”
