A new computer network should allow US health officials to trace the source
of food poisoning outbreaks within a few hours, rather than the days or weeks it
now takes. PulseNet connects public health laboratories with a database shared
by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug
Administration and the US Department of Agriculture. The database contains
information on the genetic fingerprints of bacteria involved in outbreaks.
