In an effort to boost the supply of donated organs, hospitals in the US have
been ordered to report the death of every patient to regional donor
organisations. Studies have shown that only 27 per cent of families of suitable
donors are asked whether they wish to donate their relatives’ organs. About 4000
people a year die in the US while they are waiting for a transplant.
