Safe sex triumphs

27 June 1998

A few weeks of group counselling can dramatically alter the sexual behaviour
of people at risk of contracting HIV, concludes a study organised by the
National Institute of Mental Health near Washington DC.

In the study, 1876 men and women received seven group counselling sessions
stressing the importance of safe sex. A year later, they reported about half the
number of high-risk sexual behaviours compared to people who had attended only a
single session where they viewed an AIDS education video (Science, vol
280, p 1889).
