The Songs of the Grasshoppers and Crickets of Western Europe is science for
its own sake. As a 40-year labour of love, David Ragge has recorded the noises
made by each of the 170 orthopteran species. The book, which costs £65,
contains oscillograms of the calls while a £25 companion set of CDs has
