Stunning idea

By Barry Fox

15 August 1998

Abraham Verburg of the Netherlands is patenting a better way to fish with
electricity (W0 98/10640). Some trawlers tow charged cables behind them to stun
fish and improve their catch. But saltwater quickly corrodes the electrodes, so
the cables must be replaced regularly. Verburg proposes using a nylon cable with
a copper core and sockets along its length.

Removable electrodes are screwed into the sockets and can easily be replaced
when corroded.
