Spaced out

15 August 1998

Homes have been found for a colony of 141 chimps which ushered in the space
age, the US Air Force said last week.

The military established the colony in the 1950s for experiments on the
physiology of space travel. Some of the chimp descendants will go to an animal
sanctuary, while most will stay at their current home, the Coulston Foundation,
which conducts research in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Animal rights groups who are
unhappy with Coulston’s animal welfare record may appeal against the decision.
