Four antibiotics fed to farm animals to make them grow faster are likely to
be banned from European farms. European Union agriculture ministers meeting next
week are expected to suspend use of the growth promoters virginiamycin,
spiramycin, tylosin phosphate and bacitracin zinc, which also serve as
antibiotics in hospitals. The move is designed to prevent the spread of
antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
