Australia’s research in Antarctica is in disarray after the ship that ferries
scientists and supplies to the continent broke down for the third time in seven
months. A fire broke out in the engine room of the Aurora Australis just 10
hours after it left Fremantle. The boat had just been repaired after a propeller
failed last November. That mishap followed another engine-room fire in July.
