Bigger is better

Undeveloped land in the US became a little more secure last week when the
Clinton administration announced that it will set aside more than $1
billion for land acquisition in next year’s budget. The total includes
$442 million to purchase additions to national parks and other federal
lands, and $588 million to fund purchase by state and local governments.
Most of the money will come from royalties collected from offshore oil
drilling.

Vice-President Al Gore separately announced $700 million in tax
credits to cities to encourage “smart growth” that reduces urban sprawl.
