First for GM food

Scientists advising the European Commission have given the thumbs up to a
genetically modified radicchio. The plant, made by Dutch firm Bejo Zaden, is
resistant to a herbicide. If their advice is accepted, it will be the first GM
plant approved in the European Union for direct human consumption. All other
approved GM plants are processed before sale.
