Squaring the circle

27 February 1999

A unique carved stone circle in downtown Miami, dating from between 1200 and
1400 AD and threatened by a developer’s plan to build an office block on the
site, may be preserved in situ after all. Archaeologists had been told
that they would have to hack the circle from the bedrock and take it to a museum
(This Week, 20 February, p 22).
But last week, the Miami-Dade County Commission
decided to buy the site from the developer, Michael Baumann. The price still has
to be negotiated, however. Baumann wants $28 million, but he only paid
$8 million for the land.
