Switzerland has become the first country to eradicate rabies by vaccinating
foxes against the disease. To be classified as rabies-free, a country must have
had no cases for two years. In most of western Europe rabies has been reduced
dramatically by scattering pellets containing live vaccine around fox habitats
twice a year. But pockets remain, especially in Germany, where rabies control
falls to state governments and is patchy.
