The first of a number of problem dates for computing’s millennium bug has
come and gone without much ado. Some experts had been predicting problems on 9
April because it marked the 99th day of the 1999. This, it was feared, might
have caused problems because in some systems it may have been represented as
9999, a number frequently used in programs to mean “end of file”. Yet despite
this, the day passed without major incident. The next problem date is 9
September, which may also be represented by some software as 9999.
