What must be a contender for the most antisocial domestic device of all time
has appeared on the website of the Invisible Stereo company of Memphis,
Tennessee (www. centuryinter.net/invisiblestereo). The firm wants to turn your
living room into a loudspeaker diaphragm by clamping 1-kilogram electromagnets
to the walls and ceiling. “Think of the wall as a speaker cone or drum head,”
suggests the firm, promising “shocking levels” of sound. The magnetic drivers
each vibrate a wall area about 2.5 metres in diameter, enveloping the room’s
occupants in sound, without any sign of a speaker grille. What the neighbours
will make of it is anybody’s guess.
