World leaders have commissioned a global investigation into the safety of
genetically modified food. In a joint communiqué issued this week at
their summit in Cologne, Germany, leaders of the G8 nations invited the
Paris-based OECD—which represents the world’s industrialised
nations—to prepare two studies on biotechnology. One will focus on whether
genetically modified food is safe to eat; the other will examine how
biotechnology is regulated in different countries. However, the investigation
does not extend to the environmental safety of modified crops. The OECD will
report back at next year’s G8 meeting in Okinawa, Japan.
