Baboon virus

9 October 1999

A live animal virus has been discovered in the blood of a patient who had a
baboon liver transplant in 1992. The patient died within months of the
operation, but when Marian Michaels of the University of Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, examined blood samples she found traces of a live, replicating
cytomegalovirus unique to baboons. It is not thought to have caused the
patient’s death.
