Cheeky test

27 November 1999

A test that predicts whether young people are likely to develop high blood
pressure has been developed by researchers at the CSIRO, Australia’s national
resarch organisation. They used a radioisotope of sodium to measure how quickly
a sample of a person’s cheek cells takes up the element . A low uptake indicates
a greater risk of developing high blood pressure.
