Act of creation

8 January 2000

Whether it’s The Elephant’s Child or the big bang, children are
fascinated by origins. David Walker’s A Leaf in Time is a crucial
creation tale showing how plants evolved from cyanobacteria to today’s green
stuff, struggling with climate change and deforestation. While probably intended
for the six to eights, it was a hit with four-year-old Josh: “It’s a good story
and the pictures are exciting. I learned that plants give us oxygen to breathe.”
Clearly deserving of its place in the Making Sense of Science series. Published
by Portland Press, £6.99, ISBN 1855780976.
