Frank Huyler’s experiences of emergency medicine in New Mexico are the theme of The Blood of Strangers. Observant and sympathetic, Huyler is a vivid writer. Some pieces are bizarre, such as the tale of the engineer in the desert who was targeted by a heat-seeking missile. A slight book, but each flash of memory is gripping nonetheless. Published by the University of California Press, £12.50, ISBN 0520218639.
