Rattling cybersabres

22 January 2000

Taiwan says it is prepared to unleash a devastating assault on China’s
computer systems if the island is ever attacked by mainland China. Lin
Ching-ching, a senior official in the Taiwanese defence ministry, claimed last
week that Taiwan had developed an arsenal of 1000 malicious computer
viruses.

Although he declined to give any details of the viruses, Lin claimed that
they had performed well during cyberwar exercises where a “red” team,
representing China, attacked “blue” Taiwanese computers. When the red team was
armed with the viruses, they successfully invaded the blue computers.
