A draft US government report admits there have been elevated cancer rates
among 600 000 workers at 14 American nuclear weapons plants over the past four
decades. President Clinton commissioned the report, based on extensive
epidemiological studies, after some workers suffered from beryllium poisoning.
This is the first time the government has admitted to a cancer link, and the
report opens the way to possible compensation claims from sufferers.
