Three down

22 April 2000

Working drafts of the sequences of human chromosomes 5, 16 and 19 have been
completed by US Department of Energy labs—the next major milestone since
the completion of chromosome 22
(Â鶹´«Ã½, 4 December 1999, p 5).
The three chromosomes represent 11 per cent of our genome and contain ten to
fifteen thousand genes. Although 10 per cent of each sequence remains unknown,
the drafts already contain almost everything of value that will ever come out,
says Elbert Branscomb, head of the DOE’s Human Genome Program.
