Eye for disaster

22 April 2000

Crash-resistant video cameras should be installed in airliner cockpits to
help investigators discover the cause of airline disasters, according to the US
National Transportation Safety Board. Footage from such cameras might have
helped investigators looking into disasters such as the Egypt Air flight 990
crash last October, in which 217 people were killed. But pilots’ unions say that
the cameras would be an invasion of privacy. The Federal Aviation Administration
has yet to make a decision.
