A DOZEN new species of monkeys, five new birds, a deer and a peccary have
been discovered in Brazil.

Marc van Roosmalen of the National Institute for Amazon Research in Manaus
found the new species in a part of the Amazon he calls “terra incognita for
biologists”.

The area, near the Rio Madeira, probably fosters diversity because rivers
split it into isolated zones. “The Madeira was and still is filled with big
black caimans that attack every animal that tries to swim to the other side,” he
says. Descriptions of two new squirrel-sized marmosets will appear in
Neotropical Primates, but…
