Missile blaster

13 May 2000

Military researchers in the US and Israel are testing a powerful laser
designed to shoot down incoming short-range missiles. The Tactical High Energy
Laser has already been fired at stationary targets on the ground. Within the
next month, it will attempt to shoot down a Katyusha rocket at the White Sands
Missile Range in New Mexico, followed by a test on a salvo of missiles, says the
US Army Space and Missile Defense Command. Israel wants the laser to intercept
terrorist missile attacks.
