New Zealand is playing host to over 100 illicit research projects involving
genetically modified organisms, according to the country’s Environmental Risk
Management Authority. ERMA is now halfway through checking on the safety of the
unauthorised experiments. So far none of the experiments is putting people or
environment at risk, says Bas Walker, ERMA chief executive. “The institutes
involved are both concerned and embarrassed that they have been caught out,” he
says.
