Sideways periscope

1 July 2000

A car that can see around corners could make it easier for drivers to pull
out of blind junctions, according to its developer, Nissan. Sideways-looking
video cameras mounted on either side of the front bumper scan the road to the
left and right of the car. An image processor then analyses the images and works
out if a collision could be looming. If so, it triggers a warning sound in the
car. The system should hit the production line in 2002.
