Hot suit

22 July 2000

A potentially fatal fault has been discovered in at least 12 of NASA’s
spacesuits, leaving space engineers scrambling for a solution before the next
mission to the International Space Station, scheduled for September. The fault
lies with a component in the emergency oxygen supply system that so far has
never been needed in more than 80 space walks. But a month ago a contractor
discovered that one component was contaminated with an oily substance that might
make it burst into flames.
