Too little, too soon

22 July 2000

Today’s WAP cellphones are already obsolete. They can receive stripped-down
Web pages at a painfully slow 9.6 kilobits per second, but they can’t receive
the new General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) datastream, which is 10 times
faster. Cellular networks T-Mobil in Germany and BT Cellnet in Britain are
already supporting GPRS, and new GPRS phones such as Motorola’s newly launched
Accompli are also able to download data from WAP servers. BT Cellnet is now
giving away 9.6 k WAP phones.
