Fishy story

12 August 2000

SUSPICIOUS judges at a fishing competition in Lake Saimaa, Finland, resorted
to DNA testing when confronted with an unusually large salmon. Craig Primmer and
his colleagues at the University of Helsinki used a recently developed method
that can reveal whether an individual is from a given population. This showed
the salmon wasn’t from Lake Saimaa and the contestant then confessed to buying
it in a shop (Proceedings of the Royal Society B, vol 267, p 1699). The
technique could be used in suspected cases of poaching.
