Incinerating waste at high temperatures releases polluting nitrogen oxides.
Nanomaterials Research of Colorado claims that dosing a silica-alumina catalyst
with high-energy radio waves in the flue of an incinerator lowers NOx emissions
(WO 00/15586). Very thin and porous layers of the catalyst are deposited on an
inert plate that is put in the flue. A high-power electromagnetic field heats
the catalyst, and the company claims this is extremely effective at breaking
down NOx.
