IF YOU’RE planning a holiday in the Mediterranean, take heed. A giant squid,
Architeuthis, has washed up on a beach near the Straits of Gibraltar,
Maria Gonzales of the Malaga Oceanographic Centre and her colleagues report in
the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the UK (vol 80, p
745).

Gonzales thinks that the squid may have wandered in from the Atlantic and
become stranded, rather than living in the Med. The dead squid’s tentacles were
missing, but its body was over 1 metre long. With tentacles, it might have been
