Rubbery roofs

By Barry Fox

9 September 2000

Here’s a neat idea for disposing of old tyres: turn them into roof tiles.
John Handley of Deal in Kent has hatched a scheme to slice old tyres radially
into U-shaped sections, with a few holes drilled near the edges (GB 2 344 833).
To build a roof, two layers of tyre sections are laid over rough wood joists. In
the lower layer the concave Us face upwards, while the second layer is the other
way up, with the Us facing downwards. Together, the overlapping sections make a
waterproof cover.
