Purple Earth

16 September 2000

Comparisons of genetic sequences reveal that purple bacteria have the most
ancient photosynthesis genes, says Carl Bauer of Indiana University in
Bloomington. The bacteria get their purplish-red colour from the same compounds
that give autumn leaves their colour (Science, vol 289, p 1724).
