SICK of coming home from parties stinking of cigarette smoke? Try wearing
polyester.

Rudolf Noble of the Cathedral Hill Obesity Clinic in San Francisco tested the
absorbency of 26 different fabrics by hanging samples in an enclosed container
with a burning cigarette for 15 minutes. Wool, cotton and linen came out worst,
all gaining 20 to 30 milligrams—around 1 per cent of their weight—in
smoke (Science of the Total Environment, vol 262, p 1). But a
similar-sized piece of polyester absorbed only 0.7 milligrams.
