Technology

Going spare

By Barry Fox

2 December 2000

Anyone who has struggled to set up a new VCR or digital TV receiver via a
TV’s aerial socket will welcome Pace Micro Technology’s new patent (EP 1 026
892). Aerial connections must occupy a frequency which is not already taken by a
TV station or another piece of equipment. But there are few spare frequencies
because the airwaves are now so crowded. But Pace has devised an intelligent
scanner that sweeps the frequency band, looking for gaps. It then sets the
output of the equipment to the best spare frequency.
