SHARKS stirring up a smokescreen of sediment to trap prey may be the cause of
mysterious milky streaks of water around the Bahamas, according to a marine
scientist.
Clouds of fine white particles known as whitings often appear in the sea off
the Bahama Banks. The suspended material forms bright streaks that have been
spotted from the space shuttle and can cover a total area as large as 200 square
kilometres.
Local residents suspect the whitings are stirred up by schools of fish. But
there are comparatively few fish in the area where the clouds form. Instead,
