Chicks and drugs

9 December 2000

The creators of Dolly the cloned sheep were expected to unveil Britney the
chicken in front of the world’s press this week. According to press reports,
Britney and her flockmates are genetically engineered to lay eggs containing
anticancer drugs. Helen Sang and her colleagues at the Roslin Institute in
Edinburgh produced the flock with the help of Viragen, a company in Florida.
GeneWorks of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and AviGenics of Athens, Georgia, boast
similar projects
(Â鶹´«Ã½, 13 November 1999, p 25).
