WE ARE in danger of exhausting our own food supply. The technology that lets
us make enough food for the planet is spoiling the soil and water that it uses,
according to a report by researchers and the World Bank.

The study, released last week, shows that degraded soils, dried-out aquifers,
polluted waters and the conversion of natural forest to agricultural land are
seriously threatening world food supplies. “The agricultural community for years
has been in denial that they’re harming the environment,” says author Stanley
Wood from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
